Apply For The Funza Lushaka 2019 Bursary

Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme

For those who have applied to study towards a teaching qualification and have unfortunately not been approved for funding at any institution that offers bursaries, there is another bursary option for you in the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme.

Funza Lushaka Bursary

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year bursary programme which aims to promote teaching as a profession and as such, is available to eligible students who are willing to complete a teaching qualification.

Please note that the recipients of the bursaries are required to teach at a public school for the same amount of time that the bursary was received by them. For example, if you took 4 years to complete your qualification under the Funza Lushaka Bursary, you will be required to teach for the same amount of time that you’ve received the bursary.

How Does It Work?

Please note that you have to reapply each year online for the bursary, which includes completing the placement information (which is required each and every year that you’re planning to apply for the bursary). An important fact to remember is that there are a limited amount of bursaries available for 2019 and as such, students should look to apply at alternative bursary funding schemes rather than just apply for one and pinning all your hopes on it.

The programmes that WILL be funded in order to obtain a bursary are:

  1. Bachelor of Education (BEd); and
  2. Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

Once a student gains admission to a teaching qualification, applications for the bursary may be submitted online at www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za.

When you successfully graduate, you will be placed in a suitable teaching position in a public school via your provincial education department. Note that graduates from the scheme will not be able to choose which school they prefer to be placed in as this is in the PED’s discretion. Graduates are also not allowed to take a gap year in-between teaching posts.

Should a particular PED not have a teaching position for graduates, the graduate may be placed in a PED that have a suitable open teaching post.

Applications for the 2019 Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme have been open from the 05th October 2018.

When To Apply

The closing dates to apply for funding are:

  • Re-Applications closes on 23rd November 2018
  • New Applications closes on 11th January 2019

At time of writing, students who want to re-apply unfortunately cannot as the closing date has passed on by. However, new applicants have until 11th January next year to apply, so apply before it’s too late.

They will not accept any late applications.

The Programme will provide feedback on the selection process to students by no later than end of April 2019.
