If you have ever wondered about where you will be able to get into university or college after receiving your matric results. Then these are the two very important things to ask yourself:
- What should my marks be?
- Where will the pass level take me?
What Should My Marks Be?
These two qualifications require different matric results. It all comes down to your APS.
An Admission Point Score uses your matric results to calculate a score out of ten that an institution will use to determine if you are accepted.
How To Calculate Your APS
Your APS is calculated with 6 subjects, including two languages, maths, and your three other subjects (excluding life orientation).
What Is The APS For A Bachelor’s Degree Pass?
A bachelor degree pass means that you have:
- APS of 4 in at least 4 high credit subjects
- APS of 3 in your home language
- APS of 2 in any 2 other subjects
- A total APS of 23
What Is The APS For A Diploma Pass?
A diploma pass means that you have:
- APS of at least 3 in your home language
- APS of at least 3 in 4 high credit subjects
- APS of 2 in any other 2 subjects
- A total APS score of 19
If you do not meet these requirements there is no need to stress, you can still work your way up to it by doing a bridging course or taking distance learning courses while working.

Where Will The Pass Level Take Me?
If you are working towards furthering your education after high school, the specific pass level you obtain will determine where you will be able to study.
A Bachelor’s Degree Pass
This pass level will enable you to apply for a degree at a university. Keep in mind that this does not mean you will get accepted.
Universities have a list of requirements including your APS that needs to be met.
A Diploma Pass
A Diploma Pass will make it possible for you to apply for a diploma course at a college or university.
Having a diploma pass does not necessarily mean that you will be enrolled. The minimum APS will not always guarantee successful admission.
If you do not get accepted, or if you do not have a matric certificate, you can still make it to the top.
Other Distance Learning Colleges:
Many other distance learning institutions accept any pass rate. These include:
- Ember Academy.
- TWP Academy
- Bellview Institute of Distance Learning.
- The Décor School.
- The Learning Group.
