Digital Marketing courses do not have specific high school subject requirements. While some subjects can be helpful, like business studies, they are not a prerequisite for studying a marketing course. 

Do I Need Maths In High School To Study Marketing?

You do need basic maths to be able to study a marketing course, as many things will involve maths, like financial reports and statistics. However, it is not necessary to have Maths as a subject, you can have Maths Literacy. 

Can I Study Marketing With Maths Literacy?

Yes, you can, but only at certain institutions. Some universities, such as the University of Johannesburg, require Maths for a marketing course. Check with the institution you are applying to study with about whether they accept Maths Literacy. 

Do I Need A Matric To Study Marketing?

No, you do not have to have your Matric to be able to study marketing. There are many reputable distance learning colleges that offer provider programmes in marketing management. 

These provider programmes are open-access, meaning there are only two requirements:

  • You can understand, read and write in English
  • You are over the age of 16

These provider programmes are often referred to as short courses. 

Where Can I Study Marketing In South Africa?

This depends on whether you have your Matric. If you have your Matric, you can study a NATED course in Marketing, no matter your pass level. NATED courses only require that you have passed Matric. If you do not have your Matric, you can study a short course in Marketing. 

NATED stands for National Accredited Technical Education Diploma. These courses are recognised both locally and internationally. They are highly regarded in South Africa, and are recognised as formal qualifications.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Marketer?

This depends on whether you are studying a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, a NATED Marketing Management course, or a short course.

If you are studying at the Bachelor’s Degree level, it will usually require a minimum of four years to complete your Degree.

If you are studying a NATED Marketing Management course, which is designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), this will take a minimum of three years to complete.

This consists of three theory levels of six months each, followed by 18 months of work experience for the practical side of the qualification. These NATED courses are designed to give you both theory and practical knowledge to help bridge the youth unemployment gap.

If you are studying a short course, it depends on where and what course you study. Skills Academy offers three different Marketing Management short courses ranging from four months to 12 months in length.
