If you have done your Matric but failed or were unsatisfied with your results, you have two options to improve your Matric results:
Matric Rewrite is for those under the age of 21, who have been out of Matric for less than five years.
Matric Upgrade is for those over the age of 21, who have been out of Matric for over five years.
Which College Can I Upgrade My Matric Results?
There are many reputable distance learning colleges that offer Matric programmes, such as:
- Bellview Institute of Distance Learning
- Matric College
- Skills Academy
Bellview Institute and Matric College also offer Matric Rewrite courses, and all three colleges also offer Adult Matric
About Matric Programmes
Matric Rewrite
When rewriting your Matric, you may rewrite a maximum of two subjects. These must be subjects you wrote for your Matric final exam, you cannot change subjects for a Matric Rewrite.
Note that if you failed Matric, you will only be allowed to rewrite if improving the marks of two subjects will change your overall result from a fail to a pass. If your overall result will not change, you will not be allowed to rewrite.
To apply for a Matric Rewrite, you will need:
- A copy of your Statement of Results
- A certified copy of your ID
Matric Upgrade
When doing a Matric Upgrade, you may upgrade as many subjects as you like. You can also choose to change any or all of your elective subjects.
You may apply for a Matric Upgrade as early as 19. However, you must be over the age of 21 to write the exams because you will write the Adult Matric exams.
To apply for a Matric Upgrade, you will need:
- A copy of your Statement of Results
- A certified copy of your ID
Adult Matric
Adult Matric is for those over the age of 21 who did not complete their high school education. Once you have successfully completed your Adult Matric, you will receive your Senior Certificate. This works exactly the same way as a National Senior Certificate/Matric Certificate.
To apply for Adult Matric, you will need:
- A copy of your Grade 9 report or equivalent
- A certified copy of your ID
Can I Upgrade My Matric Results At A TVET College?
No, you cannot upgrade your Matric at a TVET college. Most TVET colleges do offer NVC qualifications and Adult Matric for those who do not have their Matric. However, you cannot upgrade an existing Matric result through a TVET college.
Can I Upgrade My Matric At The Department Of Education?
Yes, all rewrites, upgrades, and senior certificate exams will register through the Department of Education. You can register in person at any Department of Education Office, or you can register online.
How Do They Combine Matric Results?
Combining Matric results is for if you have done a Matric Upgrade. You will apply through the Department of Education. To register in person, you must start by paying the required fee. Check the Department of Education Certification page to find out what the fee is.
You will then go into the Department of Education Office to fill in the forms, and take with you:
- Your ID
- A certified copy of your ID
- All results from all exam sittings
- Proof of payment
Who Qualifies For A Matric Rewrite?
You qualify for a Matric Rewrite if you meet the following criteria:
- You are under the age of 21
- You have been out of Matric for less than five years
- You passed Matric but are unsatisfied with your results, OR
- You failed three subjects or fewer and would like to pass two so that you can pass Matric
What Have We Learned?
There are two options for you to improve your Matric results. Many distance learning colleges offer Matric programmes. All Matric exams are registered through the Department of Education.
You can combine your results after the rewrite or upgrade exams through the Department of Education. Anyone under the age of 21 qualifies for a Matric Rewrite as long as improving the marks in two subjects will change their overall result from a fail to a pass.
