Student life is demanding. You need dedicated time to grasp new coursework, assignments take time, and you have to write exams throughout the year. Some people study part-time at Unisa and hold a day job at the same time. Add on family obligations and your time becomes even less. There may come a time when you need a break from your studies. You also need to know how to restart a degree at Unisa after deferment or simply for readmission purposes.

Your decision to put your studies on hold can be due to many reasons. Deferment is when you stop your studies for personal reasons. You may have to travel for work for several months and cannot spend time on your studies. Illness could affect you or a family member, which greatly limits your study time. You want to do well, but your current commitments are overwhelming. The only option you have is to continue your studies at a later date.

Deferment at Unisa

how to restart a degree at unisa

Deferment occurs when you pause your studies for some reason. Unisa does have a deferment option available to students. Deferment is part of the Unisa Admission Policy. Here are the things you need to know about applying for deferment:

  • Studies will be paused for one year
  • A maximum of two years deferment is allowed during your degree
  • A form must be completed for deferment to explain your situation
  • Apply before the end of the re-registration period

All deferment applications undergo checks before approval. Additional deferment is possible in exceptional cases.

Your studies must continue after the deferment year. Failure to continue will result in termination of your studies. Simply re-register for your next modules in the next registration period. Now you know how to restart a degree at Unisa after placing a hold on your studies.

Restart a degree at Unisa After Time Off

Some problems may arise after missing a year of studies. Your year away from Unisa may be due to deferment, academic exclusion, or some other reason. Now you are ready to restart a degree at Unisa.

Curriculums can change and you may find differences in your programme. Alternative modules may replace your original modules. In extreme cases, Unisa will stop presenting a specific qualification stream.

Contact the academic administrator for your college to help you. The administrator will explain the changes to you. They will advise you on what the new modules are called, or assist you in selecting a similar qualification stream.

Readmission to Unisa

Registration occurs for every semester. This registration must take place even after your first year of study. You cannot study at Unisa if you have not registered your modules. So get ready to restart your studies next year by reregistering for your degree.

Requirements to Restart a Degree at Unisa

Unisa recently released the readmission requirements for 2020. All students must meet set criteria to continue with their studies. Readmission requirements refer to academic progression rules. First-year students must obtain 36 credits in a twelve-month period. Students must get 48 credits every year from the second year of study.

There are some exceptions to these rules. All courses have a maximum study period, but it is not always possible to complete your degree within that time. Unisa has the following additional options for readmission:

  • Students who need to complete a maximum of 60 credits are granted an extra study year
  • Students with disabilities may apply for an exemption to the rules
  • An additional year can be granted if you are on an extended study programme
  • Approved deferment does not count towards the number of academic years
  • Academic exclusion can be appealed to allow readmission

In most cases, you will need to complete an application form for these readmission options.

What if my readmission is declined?

Unfortunately, some students do not qualify for readmission to Unisa. This situation happens when you have not passed the required amount of credits for your current year of study. You can appeal the case but it may still fail.

There is another way to gain readmission at Unisa. You will need to complete a certificate programme and provide proof of successful completion. It must be a one-year programme with 48 credits. The certificate must be at a minimum of NQF level 4. You can study it at another educational institution or through Unisa’s short learning programmes.

Reapply to UNISA after your certificate year. You will need to submit your certificate to UNISA and meet any additional requirements. You may be allowed to restart a degree at UNISA if the university believes you can complete your qualification successfully. Spend as much time as possible on your studies after readmission.
