Where Can I Study For A Matric Upgrade?

What Is Matric Upgrade?

Matric Upgrade is a second chance for anyone over the age of 21 who was not satisfied with their Matric results when they wrote. Many people may not be satisfied with their Matric results when they write, but may not have the means to rewrite at the time. 

 

Matric Upgrade is the way to raise your Matric marks once you are over the age of 21. With Matric Upgrade, you will write the Adult Matric exams, and you will be able to change any or all of your subjects. 

 

This means that if you feel you could have done better with more study time, which you now have, you can rewrite the subjects you wrote. Or if you feel you could have done better with different subjects, you can change your subjects to ones you feel you will do better in. 

 

Whether you want to raise your marks simply because you are not satisfied with them, or want to raise them to get into a university, or maybe you want to change your subjects so that you can enter a specific career field. Matric Upgrade is the way you can do that.

Matric Upgrade is an excellent way to open up further opportunities in terms of both further studies and employment. 

 

Having better Matric marks can help you have a better chance of being hired. The first thing a potential employer will look at is your Matric Certificate, so the better your marks, the higher your chances of being hired.

How Much Does It Cost To Rewrite Matric?

Rewriting Matric is free, you do not have to pay to rewrite your Matric. You will have to pay the fees for the college where you study for your Matric Rewrite. Find out from the college you register with about their fees.

How Many Times Can You Rewrite Matric?

There is no limit to the number of times you can rewrite your Matric, as long as you are still under the age of 21. Once you have turned 21, you can apply for a Matric Upgrade. There is no limit to the number of times you can upgrade your Matric.

Can I Upgrade My Matric At A TVET College?

No, you cannot upgrade an existing Matric result at a TVET college. At most TVET colleges, you can study TVC qualifications or an Adult Matric for those who did not complete their high school education after Grade 9. 

 

You can also apply to some bridging courses at a TVET college for a Matric Equivalent Certificate with just your Grade 9 Certificate.

Can I Upgrade My Matric After 10 Years?

Yes, you can upgrade your Matric marks any time after you have turned 21.  All you need to apply for a Matric Upgrade is:

 

  • A copy of your Statement of Results
  • A certified copy of your ID

Does NSFAS Fund Matric Upgrade?

No, NSFAS does not fund Matric Upgrade or any other Matric courses. They also do not fund short courses, studies done at a private college, or postgraduate studies. NSFAS only funds undergraduate studies at South African universities.

What Is The Difference Between Matric Rewrite And Matric Upgrade?

The main differences between the rewrite and the upgrade are which exams you will write, the age you can write them, and what restrictions are on each of them. 

 

To rewrite Matric, you must be under the age of 21. You will write the NSC supplementary exams. You must rewrite subjects you wrote for your Matric final exams, you cannot change subjects. You may only rewrite two subjects. 

 

To upgrade Matric, you must be over the age of 21. You will write the Adult Matric exams. You can choose to change any or all of your subjects if you choose. You can upgrade or change as many subjects as you like.

Do Universities Accept Upgraded Marks?

Yes, universities do accept upgraded marks. Once you have received your National Senior Certificate (for Matric Rewrite) or your Amended Senior Certificate (for Matric Upgrade), it serves as your Matric Certificate, and will be recognised the same way your original Matric Certificate would have been recognised.

Can I Rewrite My Matric At UNISA?

No, you cannot rewrite Matric at UNISA. However, UNISA does offer bridging courses for some qualifications, so you can still begin your studies. Visit their page to find out which qualifications have bridging courses.

How Do I Combine My Matric Results?

Combining your results is what you will need to do after you have done a Matric Upgrade. Your results are adjusted automatically after a Matric Rewrite. 

In order to combine the results, you will need to apply to the Department of Basic Education for a Replacement Certificate: Change of Status. 

To do this, you will need to pay the prescribed fee (visit the Certification page to find out the price). Once you have done this, you will need to go to your nearest Department of Basic Education or Provincial Education Department offices. You must take: 

 

  • Your ID
  • A certified copy of your ID 
  • All results from all exam sittings 
  • Proof of payment

What Is A Distinction In South Africa?

A distinction in South Africa is 80% or above in schools. Once you reach university, a distinction in South Africa is 75% or above.

What Have We Learned?

There are many reputable distance learning colleges that offer Matric programmes, so you can improve your Matric results. Matric Upgrade is available to anyone over the age of 21 who would like to improve their Matric results. 

 

You cannot upgrade your Matric at a TVET college. You cannot upgrade your Matric at UNISA. NSFAS does not fund Matric programmes. Matric Rewrite and Matric Upgrade are both free, all you need to pay are the fees for the college where you study your Matric programme.
