UNISA Higher Certificates are among the most popular qualifications offered by South Africa’s leading distance learning university. These programmes create an accessible entry route into higher education, giving thousands of students the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies even if they did not qualify directly for a degree after school.
This guide gives you everything you need to know – from admission requirements and available higher certificate programmes, to how the application process works, plus important dates for the 2026 academic year at UNISA.
When Matric Results Don’t Unlock Every Door
For many students, achieving their dream degree straight after Matric isn’t possible due to unsatisfactory results. This often leads to discouragement, with learners believing their study options are extremely limited.
But here’s the truth: UNISA Higher Certificates 2026 qualifications are designed to bridge that gap. Far from being “lower” qualifications, these programmes can serve as stepping stones towards full degree study once completed.
Think of them as Plan B that takes you back to Plan A. By starting with a Higher Certificate, you gain skills, knowledge, and a formal qualification that positions you to eventually apply for your chosen degree.
Why Choose a UNISA Higher Certificate?
There are several reasons why thousands of students every year pursue these qualifications, such as:
Serving as an introduction into your chosen career field.
Every programme being designed with industry needs in mind, making them practical and job-oriented.
Gaining workplace-relevant skills that improve your employability; or
Obtaining specialized training that can help give you a competitive edge when applying for entry-level roles.
Admission Requirements for UNISA Higher Certificates 2026
One of the biggest misconceptions about university admission is that it’s based solely on your Admission Points Score (APS). While your APS is important, there are additional requirements that must be met.
Here’s what matters most when it comes to qualifying for a UNISA Higher Certificate 2026 qualification:
APS Requirement: You need to have a minimum APS of 15.
Duration: Students will have a maximum of 3 years to complete a higher certificate qualification.
Academic Level: NQF Level 5.
Structure: 10 modules, each worth 12 credits, totaling 120 credits.
In addition, there are language requirements:
At least 30% in the language of teaching and learning (NSC holders).
For Senior Certificate holders: at least F on HG or E on SG in the language of teaching.
For NC(V) holders: minimum of 40% in the language of teaching.
Some Higher Certificates also require subjects from relevant fields. For example, an application for Accounting may require EMS-related subjects. Always keep in mind that meeting the APS alone won’t secure admission – all requirements must be fulfilled.
