Distance learning has grown to become the new normal since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of this, there is more and more variety in the courses available for you to study through distance learning. Some of the courses you can study through distance learning are:

  • NATED courses
  • ICB courses
  • CIMA courses
  • Short courses
  • Matric programmes

What Is A Distance Learning Course?

A distance learning course is a course studied through correspondence. This means that there are no face-to-face classes. All study material is uploaded online, or couriered to you.

There is usually academic support available, and there are tutors and teachers/lecturers who will go through the course material with you, and you can ask them for help if you need it.

How Long Does It Take To Study Through Distance Learning?

This depends on which distance learning course you are studying. If you are studying a short course, you can complete it in four months, but if you are studying for a Bachelor’s Degree through distance learning, it will take a minimum of four years.

Is Distance Learning The Same As Online?

Yes, distance learning and online learning are the same thing. Distance learning and online learning are terms used to refer to fully correspondence-based learning that has no face-to-face contact.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Distance Learning?

There are many of both advantages and disadvantages to distance learning. The main advantage is that your study times are flexible and up to you. The main disadvantage is that there are no structured classes, so you must have the self-discipline to keep up-to-date.

Being able to schedule your own study times allows students to be able to work a full time job while they are studying, or have time to do other things such as take care of family.

Having no class structure means that it is entirely up to the student to keep up with studies and assessment deadlines. This can be difficult when you get home from a long day of work or your friends want to go out on weekends.

What Can I Study At Home?

There are many courses you can study through distance learning, such as:

  • NATED courses
  • ICB courses
  • CIMA courses
  • Short courses
  • Matric programmes

NATED Courses

National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) courses are designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and have been accredited by QCTO (the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations).

This means you can use a NATED qualification to apply for work or to further your studies because they are recognised as formal qualifications by potential employers and educational institutions in South Africa.

NATED courses are designed to teach you the skills necessary for the course, and each level builds on the one before it. This means you must start at the first level (N4) and work your way up to the last level.

There are seven NATED streams of study:

  • Business Management
  • Educare
  • Financial Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Legal Secretary
  • Marketing Management
  • Management Assistant

Where Can I Study NATED Courses?

There are many reputable distance learning institutions that offer NATED courses, such as:

ICB Courses

ICB courses are created by the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB). They are accredited by QCTO, which means that they are recognised by potential employers as formal qualifications.

ICB courses are designed to teach you course specific skills, without unnecessary additional subjects. Each level builds on the one before it. This means that you must start on the first level and work your way up to the last level.

ICB courses do not require you to have Matric to be able to apply. There are three streams of study:

  • Business Management – which requires Grade 11 to be able to apply
  • Financial Accounting – which requires Grade 10 to be able to apply
  • Office Administration – which requires Matric or Matric Equivalent to be able to apply

The Business Management and Financial Management programmes both have Matric Equivalent levels. This means you could study either of these and use it to apply for the Office Administration programme.

Where Can I Study CIMA Courses?

Many distance learning colleges offer CIMA courses, such as:

Short Courses

Short courses at these colleges are open-access, which means the only two requirements you have to meet to be able to apply are that you are over the age of 16, and you can understand, read and write in English.

These short courses are designed to equip you with the skills necessary to begin your career as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Each college offers different short courses. Most short courses have a range of levels that you can choose to study:

  • A short course certificate that takes four months to complete
  • A certificate course that takes eight months to complete
  • A comprehensive/expert certificate course that takes 12 months to complete

Short Courses At Matric College

Short Courses At Skills Academy

Short Courses At Ember Academy

Short Courses At Learning Group

Matric Programmes

Matric programmes are designed to help students get or improve their Matric. There are three Matric programmes:

  • Matric Rewrite
  • Matric Upgrade
  • Adult Matric

Matric Rewrite

Matric Rewrite is for those under the age of 21 who would like to improve their Matric marks. You may rewrite a maximum of four subjects. You may not change your subjects, you must rewrite subjects you wrote for your Matric final exams.

Matric Upgrade

Matric Upgrade is for those who would still like to improve their Matric marks, but are over the age of 21. You may upgrade a maximum of four subjects. However, you can also choose to change any of these four subjects.

Note that you may apply for a Matric Upgrade at the age of 19, but you must be 21 to write the exams. This is because you will write the Adult Matric exams.

Adult Matric

Adult Matric is an option available to those over the age of 21 who did not get to complete their high school and write their Matric. Once you have successfully completed your Adult Matric, you will receive your Senior Certificate (Amended).

The Senior Certificate (Amended) functions the same way as a National Senior Certificate, or school Matric. This means you can use it to apply for jobs or to further your studies the same way you would do with a school Matric.

Where Can I Study Matric Programmes?

There are many reputable colleges that offer Matric programmes through distance learning, such as:

What Have We Learned?

  • Distance learning is a form of learning done completely through correspondence
  • The length of time you will study depends on the course you take
  • There are many courses available for you to study through distance learning
  • You can still get your Matric if you would like to
  • There are still many courses available to study even if you do not have your Matric
