What’s The Difference Between A Matric Rewrite And Matric Upgrade?

There are not many differences between a Matric Rewrite and a Matric Upgrade. The main differences are:

Matric Rewrite

Matric Upgrade

Must be under the age of 21

Must be over the age of 21

May not change any subjects

May change up to four subjects

Can be written up to five years after your Matric year

Can be written any time after you have turned 21

What Does It Mean To Upgrade Your Matric Results?

Upgrading your Matric is a way to improve your Matric final results as an adult. Once you have turned 21, you can upgrade your results. This is for those who have failed their Matric and would like to pass, or who passed but did not meet the requirements for the universities they applied to.

A Matric Upgrade is a way for those learners to improve their results so that they can pass their Matric or meet the requirements for the course they want to study. When doing a Matric Upgrade, you can improve your marks in up to four subjects.

You can also choose to change any four subjects. You cannot drop the compulsory subjects, which are your Home Language subject and your Maths subject, however, you can change the language or maths level you were studying.

Can I Upgrade My Matric Results After 5 Years?

Yes, you can upgrade your Matric results after five years. As long as you are over the age of 21, there is no time limit to when you can upgrade your Matric. There is also no limit to the number of times you may upgrade your Matric.

Who Qualifies For A Matric Upgrade?

To qualify for a Matric Upgrade, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be over the age of 21
  • You must have written Matric before

How Do You Use Upgraded Results?

Upgraded marks function the same way as your original marks. Once you have completed your Matric Upgrade, you can apply for combined results. Once you receive your new Matric Certificate with your best results, you can use this the same way you would use your original to apply to further your studies or to work.

How Much Does It Cost To Upgrade Your Matric Results?

It is free to register with the Department of Education to write the exams for your Matric Upgrade. However, you will have to pay for your tuition, academic support, and study materials at the institution where you choose to study.

How Much Does It Cost To Rewrite Matric?

The same as a Matric Upgrade applies to a Matric Rewrite. It is free to register with the Department of Education for the exams for your Matric Rewrite, but it is not free to study for it.

You will pay fees for your tuition, study materials, and academic support. These fees are determined by the institution you choose to study at.

Where Can I Rewrite My Matric Online?

You can study for your Matric Rewrite online through distance learning. You can also study for your Matric, Matric Upgrade, or Adult Matric online. However, you cannot write any Matric exams online. All Matric exams must be written in a government-designated venue.

Can I Do Matric Online?

Yes, you can study for your Matric online. However, you must write your exams in a government-designated venue.

Can You Do Matric In 3 Months?

No, you cannot complete your Matric in three months. Depending on how you choose to take your six subjects, it will take a minimum of 12 months to complete, and can take up to three years to complete.

If you choose to take all six subjects together, you can complete your Matric in one year. However, you cannot complete it faster than this. If you choose to take your subjects three per year or two per year, you will take two or three years respectively to complete your Matric.

However, if you are doing a Matric Rewrite, you can register for your rewrite in January/February, and you will write the exams in May/June.

What Can I Study If I Failed Matric?

There are still study options available to you if you have failed Matric or if you did not get to write your Matric. You can:

Matric Rewrite

If you are under the age of 21, you can rewrite your Matric. You may rewrite a maximum of four subjects. You cannot change these subjects, you must rewrite subjects you wrote for your Matric final exams.

Note that if you cannot pass Matric by improving the marks in four subjects or fewer, you will not be allowed to rewrite. You will have to re-enrol for your Matric year.

Matric Upgrade

If you are over the age of 21, you can upgrade your Matric. You may upgrade a maximum of four subjects. You can also choose to change any four subjects.

To find more information on Matric Upgrade, you can watch the principal of Matric College speak about Matric Upgrade on YouTube

Adult Matric

Adult Matric is an option available if you did not get to write your Matric. Once you have completed your Adult Matric, you will receive your Senior Certificate (Amended)

You can use your Senior Certificate (Amended) the same way you would use your National Senior Certificate, otherwise known as school Matric, to apply to further your studies or begin working.

Study Without Matric

There are many courses you can study for without Matric, such as:

ICB Courses

There are three ICB courses you can choose to study without Matric:

  • Business Management
  • Financial Accounting
  • Office Administration

The ICB Business Management programme begins at the Matric Equivalent level. It has three levels, going up to the Diploma level. The entry requirements are that you have completed Grade 11.

The ICB Financial Accounting programme begins at the Grade 11 level. It has four levels, going up to the Diploma level. The entry requirements are that you have completed Grade 10.

The ICB Office Administration programme begins at the Higher Certificate level. It has three levels, going up to the Diploma level. The entry requirements are that you have your Matric or a Matric Equivalent Certificate

If you do not have your Matric, you could use your Grade 10 to apply to  study level one of the ICB Financial Accounting course, which is grade 11 equivalent.

You can then use this to study level one of the ICB Business Management course, which is a Matric Equivalent Qualification. The entry requirement for this course is a Grade 11 or Grade 11 equivalent.

Once you have done this, you can then use this Matric Equivalent Qualification to apply to study the ICB Office Administration programme.

ICB courses have been accredited by the ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) and QCTO (the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). This means that qualifications from the ICB are recognised by employers as formal qualifications.

Where Can I Study ICB Courses?

There are many places where you can study ICB courses. Some reputable distance learning colleges that offer these ICB courses are:

Short Courses

There are also many short courses offered at four of the above colleges.

Short Courses At Matric College

Short Courses At Skills Academy

Short Courses At Ember Academy

Short Courses At Learning Group

NATED Courses

Most National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) courses also used to accept a Matric Equivalent Certificate to apply. However, this is no longer the case. To study any of the seven streams of NATED courses, you must have your Matric to be able to apply.
