NSFAS Preparing to Open Student Applications for the 2022 Academic Year

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is ready for business for 2022, according to Dr Blade Nzimande – Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation – who has issued the green light for NSFAS to open the online application window for the 2022 academic year.

This will come as a relief to many students who were eagerly awaiting news on when the NSFAS application window for 2022 would open. However, no date has been provided by the institution as yet.

On 26 October 2021, Minister Nzimande visited the NSFAS Cape Town branch in Wynberg to conduct an assessment on the readiness of the 2022 online applications system.

I am quite confident from the demonstration I have seen, that we are ready to open the 2022 online applications for eligible students.”

Minister Nzimande

Building on Minister Nzimande’s words, Mr Ernest Khoza, NSFAS Board Chairperson, stated that approval of the institution opening its application window from Minister Nzimande himself proved that they are taking steps in the right direction.

While improvements to the new NSFAS online application system for the 2022 academic year is welcome, there is some room for concern remains for some students who have previously successfully applied but received funding later than expected. However, Mr Khoza has since stated that they were able to assure the Minister that they are far better prepared to deal with any challenges that may come.

More information on the opening date of the NSFAS application window for the 2022 academic year will be revealed at a later date, with details on system improvements as well as application processes to be made available on the day of briefing.
